A joint cord is a flexible, compressible foam rod inserted into a construction or expansion joint before applying a sealant. It controls sealant depth and prevents three-sided joint adhesion failure.
If a sealant sticks to the bottom and sides of a joint, it cannot stretch naturally when structures expand. The cord acts as a bond-breaker, allowing elongation without tearing the material.
Closed-cell cords resist water absorption and are ideal for exterior joints and civil pavement applications, while open-cell cords are highly compressible and used mainly for indoor vertical joints.
The joint cord diameter should always be approximately 25% larger than the actual width of the construction joint gap. This ensures a tight, snug friction fit that won't shift during sealing.
They should be stored flat in a clean, shaded area protected from mechanical damage and prolonged direct UV exposure. Keep them clean and dry before pushing them into the joint openings.
Yes, all our polyolefin and closed-cell backing cords meet strict ASTM specifications and align completely with the structural expansion requirements of the Saudi Building Code (SBC).
